Viva Insights: quiet time

Work messages outside working hours can be a real disruption. Quiet time in Viva Insights helps you avoid work notifications on your phone during your time off. I will show you where to set it up and exactly what it switches off.

What quiet time switches off

First, the important part: according to Microsoft, quiet time mutes mobile notifications from Outlook and Teams. Messages still arrive, your phone just does not alert you to them during quiet time. For your computer you use other settings, such as the Do not disturb status in Teams.

Think for a moment: which notifications does quiet time in Viva Insights mute?

How to set up quiet time in Viva Insights

  1. Open the Viva Insights app (for example in Teams) and choose the Wellbeing tab.
  2. Find the quiet time card in the wellbeing section and select Set quiet time.
  3. Choose when notifications should stop and start again on working days.
  4. Under Mute mobile notifications all day, pick your days off. On those days your phone stays quiet for 24 hours.
  5. Select Save changes.

To change the times later, open the ellipsis (...) at the top right of the app, then Settings and the Protect time tab. The labels come from Microsoft’s guide. Depending on your version they may differ slightly.

Alternative: straight in the Teams mobile app

You can also set quiet hours directly in Teams on your phone: tap your profile picture and then Notifications. Under Block notifications, choose Block during quiet hours. Then set certain hours and whole days. With the extra switch Set on Teams and Outlook, the schedule also applies to Outlook on your phone and to Viva Insights. Note: according to Microsoft this sync cannot be reversed (Microsoft’s guide).

My practical tip

Quiet time is a personal setting. It helps you switch off and it does not measure or monitor anyone. For it to work in a team, you need an agreement on when a reply is expected. How to do that is covered in Team availability: agree response times, not always on.

Conclusion

Quiet time takes a few minutes to set up and keeps your phone quiet after work and at the weekend. Set your times now and try it out this evening.
